The Future:
Through the Eyes of a Junior Handler
It's 9 PM Friday night. Mom sets my alarm clock for 6 am. My best suit is hung ready for the morning. I sleep with the anticipation of what will come tomorrow morning. I awake. Its only 5 am. I lie in bed waiting for the alarm clock to go off. I get out of bed. Its still dark outside. I brush my teeth, comb my hair, and greet the day with thoughts of being the very best I can be.
The dogs are in the car and we are eating breakfast on the run. It is cold today but we are warm in the truck. My dogs look happy. They know the routine. Now we are lost. Even dad is asking for directions. Its hard to find the new show grounds. Are we there yet Mom? At last we arrive!
Its time to make my way into the ring. I hold my breath. I've got butterflies in my tummy. Here goes. The judge is very nice and that makes me feel better. I am feeling more relaxed. We walk around the ring and I put my dog on the table. Well here goes nothing. Deep breath. I know all the parts of my dog... at least I think I do. Click here. Yes, I know where the hocks are. Got through that one ok. Now all I have to do is walk in a straight line down and back to the judge. I never take my eyes off the judge. I know eye contact is very important. Yes, I know what my dog was bred to do in case I'm asked. She was bred to hunt fox and rodents. Almost done now. Back to the line up. I stack my dog. I know I did well.
The judge walks up to me. I step aside as the judge walks around. I make sure she sees my dog at all times. I never get between the dog and the judge. Almost done. I've made it! We all walk around, eyes on the judge. I have done my very best. She's walking up to me. Yes! Its going to be me today! My hard work has paid off. I'm excited I've won. The other exhibitors congratulate me. Today I'm the best. Tomorrow it could be my friend Tommy. I've learned to accept defeat as well as a win. I love to show in Junior Showmanship. It builds self esteem and good sportsmanship. What's more, I get to do it all again tomorrow! This time, Dad knows the way.
